2 teens accused in Wirth Park slaying

One of the teens allegedly killed a 17-year-old with a shovel during a gang initiation at Theodore Wirth Park.

A Minneapolis teenager is accused of fatally beating a 17-year-old with a shovel in Theodore Wirth Park as part of a gang initiation, then the suspect and two other teens tied a car battery to one of the victim's legs before dumping the body in a pond, according to the Hennepin County attorney's office.

Leonard B. Baker, 16, and Emmanuel Garmodhen Myles, 16, of Plymouth, were arrested and stand accused in juvenile petitions filed Monday with intentionally aiding and abetting second-degree murder and unintentionally aiding and abetting second-degree murder. Prosecutors are seeking to try them as adults.

So what are you suggesting? Taking the children away from their parents? Assigning each kid a parole officer that follows them around 24 hours a day and does the job their delinquent parents should have done? Lock the children up? Build a wall around the worst neighborhoods and declare every man for himself?

I guess I wasn't even addressing that aspect of it. I'm talking about what we can do with what resources we have right now in the law enforcement officers. My point about drugs (whether or not you agree that the sale of drugs provides a revenue stream for gangs and sparks territory related violence) is that we need to stop wasting money, time and officers on drug cases where nobody is being harmed. Put that effort into solving and preventing violent crime and burglaries. Or lay off the excess and give us some money back to build that new stadium for Brett Favre and his family.
